NLP - The 4 Stages You Will Take to Master Any Skill

Mastering a skill takes time and energy. That’s why most people don’t master anything. Seriously, 80% of the population, or even more, live in a microwave mentality and want everything, money, health, happiness and peace in 2 minutes or less. Can you seriously think it’s possible?

To be really good at something, a specific skill, you need to focus and work on it for about 1 year. That seems to be the average. Some skills take more time. Some less.

The NLP four stages of competence relate to the states involved in the process of progressing from incompetence to competence.

The four phases that NLP and psychology have identified are as follows: unconscious incompetence, conscious incompetence, conscious competence and unconscious competence.

1. Unconscious incompetence. It is like saying: “I don’t know that I don’t know”. Babies don’t know that they can walk someday. They are unskilled and even unaware that it is something that they will have to learn to function in the world. One skill you may even not be aware is that it is possible to change any limiting belief by using a 10-minute NLP pattern called the yes/no pattern. Were you aware of that? Were you unconsciously incompetent regarding that specific skill? Are you ready to move to the next level?

2. Conscious incompetence. It is like saying “I know that I don’t know”. People who have reached this stage recognized that they don’t know how to perform the skill yet and they don’t know how to master it. The individual may not understand it yet. But he or she does recognize the deficit.

3. Conscious competence. You are consciously competent when you understand or know how to do something. However, demonstrating or mastering the skill or knowledge requires a great deal of focus and concentration.

4. Unconscious competence. The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it becomes unconscious or “second nature”. The specific skill can be performed easily. He or she can also teach it to others with great clarity. That’s the most desired stage you want to move to.

Becoming skilled at time management, negotiation, sales, teaching, performing on stage or skiing and mastering them requires focus and concentration for a certain period of time.
